At times a slow computer is not a result of low memory, viruses/spyware, or too many programs running at startup. It can at times be a failing hard drive. This can be a result of either severally damaged hard drives or simply one that is starting to fail. Common known failure signs are strange clicking, clacking, or grinding noises coming from the computer. Also if you randomly get an error before starting windows saying "Unmountable Boot Volume" and after restarting it goes away, it's normally a sign of a failing hard drive. A Hard Drive's life span varies greatly and can last 3 years, 10 years, or sometimes just 1 month. Always keeping good backups are critical because your trustworthy data storing friend may just give up one day.
